The present disclosure relates to a simple and economical process for thermochromic coating. The process comprises vanadium pentoxide as a target. The process further uses a substrate that is selected from an amorphous and a crystalline substrate. The process of the present disclosure provides a single-phase stoichiometric VO2 in the form of a thin coating and avoids any post-deposition treatment.
