The present disclosure relates to lutidine fluorophores having a structure of Formula I, Formula I wherein R is selected from alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, heteroaryl and substituted heteroaryl; X is halide; and D is selected from H, �NMe2 and �OMe. The present disclosure further relates to a process for the synthesis of lutidine fluorophores having a structure of Formula I. The lutidine fluorophores of the present disclosure have characteristic emission in a region having a wavelength in the range of 450 nm to 750 nm. The lutidine fluorophores of the present disclosure are non-cytotoxic and stable at the room temperature and are effective at very low concentration. The lutidine fluorophores of the present disclosure can be used to image mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in live cells.
