Abstract
Inverse theory has been applied to interpret diverse geophysical and geochemical data to image the earth’s interior and understand the processes since its use in seismology by Backus and Gilbert (1968) and Tikhonov and Arsenin (1977). Problem is essentially reduced to solving a linear algebra problem. Current endeavor is to use more data-intensive techniques such as machine learning to reduce uncertainty in the solutions.
