Abstract
Switched reluctance motor (SRM) offers unique advantages in terms of robustness and simplicity in construction. But, noise generated in SRM is high compared to other motors. A significant difference in the radial forces of attraction between stator and rotor at aligned and unaligned rotor positions leads to higher noise generation. Noise reduction techniques can be classified into two primary domains: design modifications and post-design control schemes. Finite element analysis (FEA) tools are widely used for assessment of noise reduction techniques. In the proposed work, conformal mapping (CM) based analysis is carried out to assess a post-design control scheme involving current shaping. Comparable simulation results are obtained for radial force calculation dependent estimation of noise reduction from CM and FEA based methods. CM leads to computationally efficient and simple to implement noise reduction assessment procedure. In cases where design is already optimized or available and control schemes are to be assessed for noise reduction, CM based analysis can be done.
