Abstract
Electrochemical sensing is a rapidly advancing field due to its easy detection of various analyte, low cost and ease of use. It contributes to improving public health, environmental sustainability, food security, and national security by enabling efficient and reliable detection of various substances. A variety of materials are utilized in electrochemical sensing to facilitate efficient detection and quantification of target analytes. Commonly employed materials include conductive polymers, metal nanoparticles, carbon-based materials and various metal oxides. These materials serve as electrode substrates or sensing elements, providing large surface area, good conductivity and selective interaction with target molecules. Mesoporous and macroporous carbons are promising electrode materials for electrochemical sensors thanks to their inimitable structural characteristics and exceptional electrochemical performance. This book chapter provides an insight of the new advancements in utilizing mesoporous and macroporous carbons in electrochemical sensor applications. The chapter examines the utilization of mesoporous and macroporous carbon-based electrodes in different types of electrochemical sensors. Finally, the future perspectives regarding the mesoporous and macroporous carbon-based electrochemical sensors are discussed, paving the way for highly sensitive and reliable sensing platforms for various analytical applications.
